Where to Start: A Friendly Guide to Decluttering Your Home

Welcome, clutter conquerors! If you've found yourself eyeing that overstuffed closet or crammed garage with a mix of determination and trepidation, you're not alone. Decluttering can feel like a daunting task, but fear not! With a bit of strategy and a sprinkle of motivation, you can transform your space into a sanctuary of organization and peace.

One of the biggest hurdles in decluttering is knowing where to begin. Should you tackle that mountain of paperwork first, or dive headfirst into the abyss of random knick-knacks? Fear not, dear reader, for I've got your back. Let's navigate this decluttering journey together and discover where to start.

1. Assess Your Space:

Take a leisurely stroll through your home, armed with a notebook or your phone's notes app. Jot down areas that seem to accumulate clutter more than others. Is it the kitchen counter that's always cluttered with mail and keys? The bedroom closet bursting at the seams? Identifying problem areas will help you prioritize your decluttering efforts.

I get it. I say this is every post - but that’s because it’s true! Rome wasn't decluttered in a day, and neither will your home be. Begin with a small, manageable area to build momentum. Maybe it's a single drawer in your desk or a shelf in the living room. By starting small, you'll experience quick wins that will motivate you to tackle larger spaces.

3. Follow the 80/20 Rule:

The Pareto Principle applies to decluttering too! Typically, we use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. Identify the items you use regularly versus those collecting dust. If you haven't touched it in months (or years), it might be time to bid it farewell.

4. Consider the KonMari Method:

Marie Kondo's KonMari Method advocates keeping only items that "spark joy." While it might sound whimsical, there's wisdom in surrounding yourself with things that bring happiness. Hold each item in your hand and ask yourself, "Does this spark joy?" If not, it might be time to part ways.

5. Declutter by Category:

Sometimes it's easier to declutter when you're focused on a specific category of items. You could start with clothes, then move on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items. Breaking it down into bite-sized chunks makes the process less overwhelming.

6. Donate, Recycle, or Trash:

As you declutter, create three distinct piles: donate, recycle, and trash. Be mindful of items that could find new life with someone else. That sweater you haven't worn in years might be someone else's treasure. Recycling and properly disposing of items ensures you're decluttering responsibly.
